PLANT OF RENOWN

printer friendly version
And I will raise up for them a plant of renown,
and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land,
neither bear the shame of the heathen any more. (Eze 34:29)

A tree is a plant.  Throughout the Word of יהוה, people are compared to trees.  The garden in Eden is described as an orchard in Eden…a planting of trees.
And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. (Gen 2:8-9)
According to Isaiah, God declares the end from the beginning. (Isa 46:10)  In the beginning the LORD God planted trees that were good for food.  As part of the restoration of all things, the passage in Ezekiel 34:29 describes a “plant of renown” that will end hunger in the land.
Isaiah also provides imagery of a planting of the LORD.  This planting describes a righteous people that are compared to branches and “trees of righteousness” that glorify Him:
Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of My planting (H4302), the work of My hands, that I may be glorified. (Isa 60:21)

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting (H4302) of יהוה, that He might be glorified.
(Isa 61:3)
According to Strong’s Concordance, the word translated as “plant” in the above passage is H4302.  This word is associated with:
something planted, that is, the place (a garden or vineyard), or the thing (a plant, figuratively of men); by implication the act, planting
The word translated as "renown" is H8034 "shem”.  Shem is associated with:
an appellation, as a mark or memorial of individuality; by implication honor, authority, character
So this plant of renown in Ezekiel seems to refer to something planted (figuratively referring to men) that serves as an appellation, mark, honor, authority, character.  This "plant" or "planting" serves as food.  This "plant" or "planting" serves to take away shame.

Unravelling the parable, the “plant of renown” and “trees of righteousness” seem to allude to the Righteous Branch and His branches.
The plant or planting of renown serves as an appellation, mark, honor, authority, character.  Consider the symbol of authority in Moses' hand.
And Moses answered and said, "But behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say 'the Lord hath not appeared unto thee.'  And the Lord said unto Him, ' What is that in thine hand?'  And he said, 'A rod.' ... And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand wherewith thou shalt do signs." (Exo 4:1-2, 17)
The rod in Moses' hand was a branch (H4294).
H4294
מטּה
mat-teh', mat-taw'

From H5186; a branch (as extending); figuratively a tribe; also a rod, whether for chastising (figuratively correction), ruling (a sceptre), throwing (a lance), or walking (a staff; figuratively a support of life, for

example bread): - rod, staff, tribe.
It was through this branch that Moses and Aaron were able to perform signs.  What was their duty?  To speak and do only what came from the Most High.  It was through the branch that the Most High transferred His power and authority to Moses and Aaron.  As long as the branch remained in Moses and Aaron's hands, they was able to perform signs and wonders and brought plagues and deliverance.  Through the branch in Moses hand, the waters obeyed.  Plagues came through the branch in Moses and Aaron's hands. Salvation from pharoah and his army came through the branch in Moses' hand.  In Exodus 17:9, Moses referred to the branch as "the rod [branch] of God."  Moses and Aaron were a team:  Moses was to be to Aaron instead of God, and Aaron was to be the mouth or speech or word to the people. (Exo 4:16), a picture of a king and high priest.  Aaron's rod (branch) budded, brought forth buds, bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds as a sign to the rebels of who the Most High chose to come near to Him and serve Him.

Now fast forward to the prophets who prophesied of a branch... a Righteous Branch that would raise up, reign as king and execute justice and righteousness in the earth.
Behold, the days are coming saith the LORD that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. (Jer 23:5 see also Isa 4:2, Jer 23:5-6, Jer 33:15, Zec 3:8, Zec 6:12)
What was the duty of the Righteous Branch?
I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of Him who sent me. (Joh 6:38)
As in the shadow, this Righteous Branch grew up in the power and authority of the Most High.
"All power has been given unto me in heaven and in earth." (Mat 28:18)
Just as in the shadow, the Righteous Branch demonstrated this power by performing many signs and wonders. He cast out unclean spirits, healed the sick, caused the blind to see, the deaf to hear, the lame to walk, forgave sin.  Even the waters obeyed Him. (Mat 8:27)  Salvation came through the Righteous Branch. The book of Hebrews explains that the Righteous Branch is High Priest in the order of Melchizedek (Heb 5:10).

The Righteous Branch referred to His disciples as branches... branches that should abide in Him (imagery depicted through the lamp/menorah).  As long as His branches abide in Him, the Righteous Branch, then the branches would bear the same fruit... the fruit of light... the light of the commandments of
יהוה. What is the duty of the branches?
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. (Joh 15:10)

And he said to them, "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel [of the kingdom of God] to the whole creation.
(Mar 16:15-18)
Just as Moses and Aaron clung to the branch and power and authority was transferred to them, so it is with the branches. As long as the branches hold fast to the Righteous Branch, power and authority will be transferred to them.  They, too, will be able to perform signs and wonders.
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name (authority, character) shall they cast out devils; they shall speak in new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (Mar 16:17-18)

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name (power, authority), this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name (power, authority), I will do it. (Joh 14:12-14)
It is interesting to note that the almond tree is associated with the priesthood: the menorah, Aarons' rod, Jeremiah the priest's vision, Jabal al-Lawz.  An almond branch was chosen to serve as a shadow of the Righteous Branch... the High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.  In the shadow, Aaron's branch "resurrected" as a sign to the rebels of who יהוה chose to serve Him. Likewise, the real thing... the Righteous Branch resurrected... as a sign to the rebels of who יהוה chose to serve Him. Concerning the almond tree, there are two harvests or gatherings:  a firstfruits harvest and a final/last harvest.  The Righteous Branch was the Firstfruit of the resurrection. So shall it be with His branches... it is written that those who take part in the first resurrection "shall be priests of God and of Messiah, and shall reign with Him for a thousand years." (Rev 20:6)  Consider the imagery conveyed through the menorah - the light in the holy place - which was patterned after a blossoming (abib) almond tree. The menorah has a center branch to which the six other branches unite... and all branches produce the same "fruit"... the "fruit" of light. The Righteous Branch said that He is the Light of the world. We are told that if we abide or remain in Him, then we will bear the same fruit... the fruit of light.  If we shall bear the same fruit as the Righteous Branch, and the Righteous Branch shall execute judgment and justice on the earth, then so shall those who rule and reign with Him... His priests.... in the order of Melchizedek.
The plant or planting of renown serves as food.  "...they shall no more be consumed with hunger in the land."  The branches of the almond tree produce fruit which contains a seed known as one of the world's healthiest foods. A serving of sweet almonds is a rich source of Vitamin E, magnesium, protein, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron and polyunsaturated fats.

It is written:
Behold, the days are coming," declares the Lord GOD, "when I will send a famine on the land-- not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD. (Amo 8:11)
While in the bondage of slavery to pharoah in Egypt, the children of Israel were starving for a righteous ruler with righteous laws.  Holding fast to the branch in hand, Moses & Aaron fed the word of יהוה to the children of Israel and brought them out of bondage.  As they wandered in the wilderness, they were provided with food from heaven.

When the Righteous Branch came and dwelt on the earth, He fed the people spiritual food directly from His Father, food without doctrines or traditions of men.
Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world"… "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. (Joh 6:32-35)
As the branches of an almond tree produce fruit which contains a seed known as one of the world’s healthiest foods, figuratively speaking, the Righteous Branch produces the fruit of righteousness (hearing and obeying) which contains the Seed…the Word of God (Luk 8:11), the Seed that gives life.
…whoever feeds on this bread [food] will live forever. (Joh 6:58)
How are His branches to serve as food?
He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.” (Joh 21:17)
If the branches abide in the Righteous Branch, they, too, should produce the fruit of righteousness that contains the Seed of Life…the Word of God.  The branches are to proclaim the gospel of the kingdom of God to the ends of the earth, a righteous King coming to set up a righteous kingdom which is founded on righteous laws, the commandments of the Most High.  Through proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom of God to the whole creation, the branches will feed the whole creation with the Seed of life.
And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law. For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life: and through this thing ye shall prolong your days in the land, whither ye go over Jordan to possess it. (Deu 32:46-47)
For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
(Pro 6:23)
The plant of renown serves to take away shame.  When the almond tree awakens from its slumber, it clothes its nakedness in blossoms that turn white as snow within 5 to 14 days.  According to the Word of God, our shame or nakedness is our unfaithfulness to the commandments of the Most High; in other words, our shame is our sin, our disobedience.
We lie down in our shame and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God. (Jer 3:25)

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. (1Jn 3:4)
The Righteous Branch takes away our sin. In keeping His commandments, our nakedness is covered and we are clothed in righteousness.
Behold, the lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world." (Joh 1:29)

I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear, and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
(Rev 3:18)

And to her was granted that she may be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of the saints." (Rev 19:8)
How do the branches serve in this regard? By turning others from sin and teaching them to walk as the Righteous Branch walked.
My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. (Jas 5:19-20)
